After learning the notes in the first position it is important to increase your knowledge of the fretboard so that you are able to read music in the Fifth position. When reading in the fifth position the 1st finger plays all the notes in the fifth fret, the 2nd finger plays all the notes in the 6th position 3rd finger plays all notes in the 7th fret and the 4th finger plays all the notes in the 8th fret. There are other notes such as "B" which entail a position shift back to the 4th position. The "B" note is written the same as the open "B" on the 2nd string and is played on the 3rd string 4th fret by the first finger.
