MAJOR SCALE PATTERNS

An easy way to remember scale patterns is to find one that repeats the same pattern. The following modal patterns are the same so all you need to remember is which note is the root of the mode you are using. The Tonic or Root notes are in RED for easy identification.

This idea may seem obvious at first but it took quite a few years for me to realise that instead of trying to remember the different patterns for each mode all you need to do is come up with a logical repeatable pattern. When you consider all the scales you are trying to remember and then all the different modes within each scale this idea made a lot of sense. I now think that the ideal way to remember modes is to learn the Scale Construction Formulas so that wherever you are playing you know what intervals you can work with. This however does take time!
